Charles
Richard McKenzie
- "With sorrow we record the death of Charles R. McKenzie, who
died suddenly of apoplexy at the Daniels Hotel, Prescott, Ontario,
Canada, last Friday evening. For the past three weeks Mr. McKenzie,
with his wife and son, had been visiting friends and relatives
at Fraser Point, and Burke, and other sections of Franklin County.
Last
Friday afternoon, they left the summer home of his sister, Mrs.
Elizabeth
Fraser at Fraser's Point for Lancaster, where they boarded a
train for Prescott, intending to continue their trip by boat the
following
morning to Toronto, Ontario where another sister, Mrs. Wilbur Allen,
resided. Shortly after going to their room, Mr. McKenzie complained
of a severe pain in the back of his head, which condition continue
to grow worse. Mrs. McKenzie realizing that his condition was serious
summoned the Hotel proprietor who at once called a physician, but
before the doctor's arrival, he was beyond human aid.
Charles
Richard McKenzie was a son of the late John McKenzie and was
born in Burke, New York, January 23, 1868. His boyhood days were
spent
in Burke until 1879 when the family moved to Constable. He was a
student of Franklin Academy, graduating with the class of 1888 of
which
he was Valedictorian. He later graduated from Dartmouth College in
the class of 1893, receiving the degree of B.S. with special honors
in
mathematics. For three years he successfully filled the position of
Principal of the high school at Mooers Junction.
In
1896, he engaged with Wm. J. Milne, L.L.D., of Albany and for
nineteen years has been his chief assistant in preparing the Milne
mathematical series. During this time, Mr. McKenzie has had personal
supervision
of this work. His latest book on algebra, which is now in the hands
of the printer, will mention his name in connection with the work.
On
December 30, 1907, he was united in marriage with Miss Zora F.
Hiscox,
of Troy, who with one son, Alexander, survives him. He was a man
of sterling character, whose sense of honor, was most acute, a kind
husband, and indulgent father and a staunch friend. His death comes
as a shock to a host of friends in Franklin County.
Besides
his wife and son, he is survived by one brother, Wm. McKenzie, of
Burke, and three sisters, Miss Jessie McKenzie, of San Diego,
California, Mrs. Wilbur Allen, of Toronto, Ontario, and Mrs.
Elizabeth Fraser of Fort Covington, New York."
